Indio, CA—On Thursday, June 28 at 8:00 AM, Habitat for Humanity of the Coachella Valley will dedicate the first of two new homes being built in the City of Indio for a veteran family. This home, at 82063 Mountain View Avenue in a neighborhood just east of Monroe Street and north of Avenue 44, is the result of a partnership between the City of Indio, Habitat for Humanity and The Home Depot Foundation.
The new homeowners are John Paul Hitchcock, Jr., a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy for five years, and his wife, Amber Nicole Hitchcock. John is a disabled veteran, a fulltime student and an employee at College of the Desert. John, Amber, and their two young sons are very excited to be recipients of one of Habitat’s Indio Veteran Build Homes. He stated that it is very humbling and an honor to be a part of this great mission and in the process provide his family a place to call home! John, Amber and their children will be present at the dedication.
The second new home build is located at 82155 Orange Grove. Both homes have been made possible through the generous financial support of the City of Indio’s HUD Funded Neighborhood Stabilization Program 2 (NSP2) and The Home Depot Foundation. The City’s involvement demonstrates its strong commitment to developing affordable housing and assisting families achieve home ownership.
Habitat for Humanity has been building and renovating homes in the Coachella Valley since 1989 and have built thirty-five houses in that period in various communities. In 2017- 18 alone, Habitat has placed five low-income families in homes in La Quinta and Palm Desert.
In addition to building the two new homes, more than 11 existing homes in the neighborhood received repairs and beautification by teams of volunteers through Habitat’s A Brush with Kindness program (ABWK). In total, over 350 volunteers contributed more than 1,000 hours by painting, repairing fences, installing water saving landscaping and removing brush and debris from yards.
