Message from GoldenVoice:
The 15-foot-tall bear, which has been on display at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival since 2015, was installed this week
at Shady Lane Park and is on loan to the city from Goldenvoice
There’s not many bears wandering around the Coachella Valley, particularly at this time of year. But if you visit Shady Lane Park in Coachella, you’ll see “Big Bear,” a huge 20-by-20-by-15 foot bear that was originally commissioned in 2015 by Goldenvoice, which produces the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Goldenvoice loaned the statute to the city and installed it at Shady Lane Park this week. “Big Bear is going to provide a visual anchor to our art corridor along Shady Lane, which leads into our downtown,” said Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez. Created by Santa Fe, N.M. artist Don Kennell, “Big Bear” is sculpted entirely from recycled materials, including rusted steel. He also has glass eyes.
