The Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce (GCVCC) has announced that it is supporting The Protect App-Based Drivers and Services Act Initiative, Proposition 22 on the November ballot.
The GCVCC, along with CalChamber and other leading business associations, is supporting the measure to ensure that thousands of workers continue to have access to this important work that provides a flexible option to earn income. We believe supporting app-based drivers in the gig economy is critical to a diverse and robust economy. In light of the recent economic turmoil created by COVID-19, it is more important than ever to do everything possible to position our state for a robust comeback. Gig economy jobs play a critical role in the state and local economy, not only as primary income sources, but for many of our residents a vital additional income stream.
The measure would provide important clarifications for determining who is an independent contractor and eliminate costly and ongoing litigation against companies in the gig economy. The measure would also outline wage and benefit guarantees, as well as other protections provided for drivers and passengers.
The GCVCC Business Legislative Advocacy Committee is responsible for determining the GCVCC’s position on active legislation, propositions, and other federal, state and local governance issues. The positions of the committee are based on the chambers Legislative Advocacy Platform, approved annually by the GCVCC Board of Directors.
