SUMMARY:Fiestas Patrias/El Grito 2016
DESCRIPTION:  \nNews from the GCVCC: \nJoin the City of Coachella\, The Chamber\, and Univision Palm Springs as we celebrate Fiestas Patrias/El Grito 2016 at Rancho Las Flores Park with live bands\, vendors\, a beer garden\, food\, children’s activities and much more. \nAbout the event: 15\,000 people are expected to fill the Rancho Las Flores Park in Coachella on Sept. 18 as part of a historical celebration of Mexico’s independence from Spain. \nThe El Grito celebration is extremely significant in Coachella and other east valley communities\, where many residents have strong family ties to Mexico. \nLast year’s event drew more than 15\,000 people to the park and were entertained by some of the largest Spanish-language acts. \nThe day’s activities will include an authentic “El Grito” ceremony with professional folkloric dancers from Mexicali\, Mexico. \nSeveral members of Mexicali’s council also are expected to attend. \nThe event dates back to 1810\, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla\, a Roman Catholic priest\, cried out to his parish in the town of Dolores\, near Guanajuato\, Mexico\, in what became known as the “Grito de Dolores” or “Cry of Dolores.” \nThe declaration marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. It continues to be a significant celebration for people of Mexican descent\, who mark the event each year. \nResidents across the Coachella Valley can expect more than 15 different food vendors\, along with a beer garden\, activities for kids and more than 30 informational booths announcing services for the community. \nEnjoy live bands and DJs all day\, including: Montes De Durango\, Banda Rancho Viejo and La Septima Banda! \nThe festivities begin at 3 p.m. and last well into the evening.
