Known as “The Voice of Pop,” Fonsi has broken both sales records and cultural barriers across the world with his undeniable talent, songwriting and charisma. From his 1998 debut album Comenzaré to his latest release Vida, the singer has captivated listeners by mixing a range of genres with lyrics in both Spanish and English.
In 2002, the Puerto Rican native debuted his English crossover album Fight The Feeling, including the single “Secret” featuring Joey Fatone of NSYNC. The album’s follow-up, Abrazar la vida, contained the hit “¿Quién Te Dijo Eso?” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Latin charts. His sixth album, Paso a Paso, debuted at No. 1 and furthered his international reach with hits like “Nada Es Para Siempre.”
Fonsi’s next album, Palabras del Silencio, also debuted at No. 1 and stayed at the position for several weeks. In 2008, the singer entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with “No Me Doy por Vencido,”which spent 21 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart and was named Billboard’ s Latin Pop Song of the Decade. In 2009, he received a Latin Grammy Award for Song of the Year for the ballad “Aquí Estoy Yo.” In 2011, Billboard named him the “Leader of Latin Music’s New Generation.”
In 2014, Fonsi released the album 8 — a reference to his eighth career album — and embarked on the Somos Uno tour, which continued into the following year. In January 2017, he released the worldwide smash “Despacito” featuring fellow Puerto Rican artist Daddy Yankee. The music video amassed an unfathomable 6.2 billion views on YouTube, and the English remix featuring Canadian pop star Justin Bieber reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song remained atop the charts for 16 consecutive weeks, tying “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men as the longest reigning top song in the chart’s history. “Despacito” has become the first all-Spanish single to hit 1 billion streams on spotify.
In November 2017, Fonsi released “Échame la Culpa” featuring pop star Demi Lovato, which debuted at No. 3 on the Hot Latin chart. It went on to win Song of the Year at the 2018 Latin American Music Awards and was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award.
In 2018, Fonsi released the single “Calypso” with Stefflon Don, peaking at No. 11 on the Hot Latin chart. In February 2019 he dropped his 10th studio album, Vida, which topped the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and entered the Billboard 200 at No. 18. It’s the first Latin album in 2019 to be certified 22X diamond by the RIAA and has remained the No. 1 pop album for several weeks.
Throughout his career, Fonsi has been received multiple gold and platinum records in Mexico, Spain, the U.S., Australia, Russia, Switzerland, Germany, the U.K., Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela and Central America, in addition to his native Puerto Rico, among others. He has earned some of the industry’s most prestigious honors including five Latin Grammy Awards, 12 Latin Billboard Awards, five Billboard Awards, two American Music Awards, and numerous others.
