News from Supervisor John Benoit:
An extensive stretch of Harrison Street through the Thermal and Oasis communities will undergo maintenance this fall to enhance the road’s condition, safety and pavement life.
The Board of Supervisors Tuesday voted 5-0 to award a construction contract for slurry and scrub seal projects, including work along an approximate 13-mile span of Harrison Street, between Airport Boulevard and Avenue 81.
The county project encompasses most of Harrison Street through the eastern Coachella Valley, from south of the City of Coachella to State Route 86 and the Imperial County line.
“In recent years, residents of our eastern Coachella Valley communities have benefited from a tremendous amount of transportation improvements and smoother roads,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “This project is an excellent investment in preventative maintenance, which will keep the road in good shape and avert larger problems requiring costlier resurfacing.”
The maintenance will seal small cracks, restore lost flexibility of the pavement surface and help preserve the underlying pavement structure. Slurry seal treatments reduce the need for pavement rehabilitation, which can be approximately ten times costlier.
The work will be performed by Pavement Coatings Company of Jurupa Valley, which submitted the low bid of $1.8 million. The contract also includes maintenance projects on county roads in Cherry Valley/Calimesa and Nuevo/Perris. The projects are funded by gas tax revenues.
Construction is anticipated to begin in September and will take approximately two months to complete.
