Children and Families in Crisis – Annual Educational Conference
On Friday April 28, 2017, health professionals, caregivers, educators and students are invited to attend the 4th annual Children and Families in Crisis Conference created by The Unforgettables Foundation.
This year’s topic “Trapped by Addiction: Finding the Way Out” will be presented 8:00 am – 1:30 pm at California State University San Bernandino’s Palm Desert Campus, 37-500 Cook St, Palm Desert, California 92211 with a light brunch to be catered by Cello’s Pantry, Rancho Mirage.
Prior year topics included: 1st year – “Trauma and Bad Choices” with guest speaker Don Moore (Chief Trauma Surgeon Loma Linda U Children’s Hospital); 2nd year – Child Abuse (in partnership with the Sinatra Center); 3rd year – “Bullying and Teen Suicide”; with people attending from as far as Norway.
This year our keynote speakers will be Deborah Deas, MD MPH “Dealing with Pediatric Addictions”; Clare Sheridan-Matney, MD and Glenn P. Matney, MD “Addictions After Abuse” and Special Guest Presenter, former Congresswoman Mary Bono will speak about her family’s experience with addiction. The panel members for our discussion “Changing the Family Legacy” will be: Helene Photias, MHA ; Neil Gussardo, MA. and Mark Baumgartner, MEd, LPC, LCDC.
Our conference speakers come together to pro-actively educate, inform and equip the community on prevention, identification and intervention skills and techniques. The conference will assist those in the helping professions to better understand the mechanisms that lead to and sustain addiction. The Unforgettables Foundation is operated almost entirely by volunteers, was founded in 1999 by Tim Evans. The Foundation’s mission is to assist low-income families by providing resources for
an appropriate burial for their children who succumb to accident or illness. The Foundation also works to educate local communities about risks to children’s health, safety and wholeness.
The Unforgettables Foundation has helped over 5,000 SoCal families in crisis in 17 years, with essential burial and funeral funds for children – 18 years to 32 weeks gestation. It has chapters in 4 States with the Coachella Valley now having its own stand-alone chapter); plus Toronto at Sick Kids Hospital and Ottawa at National Capital Children’s.
