COACHELLA, CA – The annual Fiestas Patrias celebration in Coachella drew massive crowds on Sunday to Rancho Las Flores Park. The event was hosted by the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce, the City of Coachella and Univision.
The history of the event traces back to The Cry of Dolores (Spanish: Grito de Dolores), which was uttered from the small town of Dolores Hidalgo, near Guanajuato in Mexico, on September 16, 1810. This event is considered the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. The “grito” was the pronunciamiento of the Mexican War of Independence by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest. Since October 1825, the anniversary of the event is celebrated as Mexican Independence Day.
The event features vendors, a beer garden, food, children’s activities and much more. The highlight of the evening was live entertainment that included stars from the world of Latin Music. The music enthralled the crowd well into the night. The event has become one of the signature events in Coachella and continues to grow each year. “It’s amazing to see the energy from the crowd” said Diana Soto, President of the Coachella Chamber of Commerce. “There are so many families and young people at the event, it is one of the best true community events in the valley.”
